The ESG strongly condemn the string of recent oil spillages evidently emanating from the Spanish industrial sector. In an otherwise vastly improved record this summer of oil-free beaches and waters throughout the Bay, these accidents have again raised the serious issue of the lack of a proper cross border plan for co-operation over planning, control and policing of oil movements in the Bay.
We therefore, once again, call for an integrated policy involving the two port authorities in this bay. If there cannot be an ‘official’ plan because of reluctance from Madrid to recognise Gibraltar waters etc, then we need to have an unofficial plan in the first instance and also push for the implementation of a formal strategy within UK / EU circles, for the longer term.
